Steve Kincade and Doug Theis finish the 2010 Tecumseh Trail Marathon

Dino Series’ Tecumseh Trail Marathon took place yesterday (December 4, 2010). Steve Kincade, long-time Team Ragged Glory member and longer-time friend, and I (Doug Theis) headed down to Yellowwood State Forest in Nashville, Indiana, wondering what the wintry mix of weather had in store for us.

As sleet poured down on the racers, Brian Holzhausen, the Race Director, announced that the roads were too dicey for the bus drivers. He wisely changed the route from a point-to-point to an out-and-back. The south half of the Tecumseh would be our gauntlet. As fortune would have it, the south half is the hilliest half of the trail.

My running partner Steve Kincade and I have been playing in the woods together for a long time. Steve and I met in 1989. Steve worked in the Lab at Methodist and I worked in IT. During the 1991 Indianapolis Mini Marathon, Steve and I ended up running together during the last mile. We started running together shortly thereafter and haven’t quit yet. I was glad he was running with me. He has an uncanny ability to grind out high mileage. Misery loves company.

TRG plans for Planet Adventure Urban Sprint and Indy Adventure Race

Team Ragged Glory is racing in August and September. Our plans for the Planet Adventure Urban Sprint Race have changed slightly, because of teammate availability due to vacations and a broken clavicle. Still working on teams, but it looks like Nancy Gawrys, Bob Mueller, Jeff Boxell and I (Doug Theis) will be racing for sure.

The Urban Sprint is reported to be almost entirely in downtown Indy this year. The race was sub-urban in the last couple of iterations.

Indy AR is at Bradford Woods near Martinsville, Indiana this year. Super hilly. Sounds like fun.

TRG helps with Planet Adventure 24 and 36 hour expedition race!

18 teams and 62 racers hit the trail on Friday night for the 10th Planet Adventure 24 and 36 hour expedition races in Paoli, Indiana. Nancy Gawrys and I (Doug Theis) volunteered this year because we couldn’t stand the idea of missing this race.

At 9pm, the maps were distributed to the teams. Racers would start with a run, then a paddle, then a bike ride to Abe Martin State Forest with a six-point orienteering section on foot. After the first o-section, they would do a long bike with both roads and trails to the second o-course on foot at Natchez. The second o-course included a rappel. After the Natchez o-couse, the final bike leg would take them back to the start/finish line at Paoli Peaks ski resort.

The heat on Friday was oppressive. Nancy and I set a couple of controls late in the day and helped prepare for the 1am race start.

More to come.
